Choosing the Right Natural Sunscreen
Are you trying to make your life more holistic by incorporating natural & organic products into your life? Despite the thousands of new brands and products that are coming out that claim to be “natural” or “organic,” you still have to read the labels closely. This is also true for picking out the right sunscreen to use to protect you from damaging UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.
First, you must always remember to choose a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for the face and SPF 15 or higher for the body. A wonderful product that B-True Organics now carries is sunscreen for the face and body from Suntegrity: a natural, healthy & holistic mineral sun care company. We have determined that this is a company we trust and feel proud to sell in our store and online. Here are some tips so you can make the same informed decision when choosing the right natural sunscreen for your holistic lifestyle:
- As mentioned earlier, only choose sunscreens with at least SPF30 or higher for the face and SPF15 or higher for the body.
- Research the ingredients. Even if you can’t pronounce it, still do some digging: some ingredients may sound funny, but they could be naturally occurring compounds from vegetable or fruit sources which is okay.
- If there are preservatives, make sure they are paraben-free, and preferably plant-based.
- What are the top 5 ingredients? These are the most important. Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest in regards to how much of the ingredient is in the product. The first ingredient is what the product is mostly made out of.
- How many ingredients are organic? The more organic ingredients there, the higher your chances are of reducing pesticides from being put onto your skin which will eventually be absorbed by your body. (Natural ingredients don’t always mean reduced or no pesticides!)
- Stay away from chemical sunscreens claiming to be natural; you want a MINERAL sunscreen.
- Research the company itself. Does the website have links to articles about their ingredients? Do they describe each ingredient? What does their “about us” page say? Hopefully the company will state how committed they are to providing natural & organic sunscreens and other products.
- Read reviews from other customers and see what they have to say about how natural it is and its effectiveness.
- If there is an ingredient you aren’t sure about, see where it lies on the ingredient. If it is near the bottom, you can at least be sure that there is a minimal or negligible amount of it in the product.
- Check for seals/certifications, such as organic certifications, “ecocert”, 100% natural, etc.
We hope that this list will help you choose the right sunscreen for you. Visit our store to try out the different sunscreens that we offer from Suntegrity, John Masters Organics, Jane Iredale makeup and more.
Naturally yours,
